Hialeah Race Track Reopens

November 29, 2009

The Hialeah Race Track (gambling allowed) reopened after being closed for eight years on Saturday with quarter horse racing scheduled through Februrary.  The race track used to be home to some of the finest horse racing in South Florida.  Originally opened in 1921 the race track is one of few historical landmarks in Miami.  Of the jockeys to call Hialeah home was my great grandfather ‘Moey’ who used to race up and down the east coast from New York to Cuba.

The race track has also served as the site for an urban design studio hosted by the University of Miami featuring the reopening and development of a mixed use community around the track.  The area is well served by public transit with the Hialeah Metro Station bordering the site to the south.
